DNA Tests Confirm Girl Killed by Crocodile Attack

Through the use of a DNA test, Australian police have now been able to confirm that the remains of a body found in a swamp, belonged to an 11-year-old girl that was killed by a crocodile attack.

On March 18, 2009, Australian police responded to a crime scene where they found the remains of Briony Anne Goodsell. The incident was reported when one day she vanished after last being spotted swimming with her sister and two other children in a swamp north of Darwin.

According to Sue Bradley, a spokeswoman for the Northern Territory Police, DNA test results confirmed that the remains of a body found in water about 450 metres from where the girl disappeared were in fact Briony's.

It has been reported that the children swimming with Briony told police they saw the head and tail of a crocodile splash the surface of the water near where Briony had disappeared moments before. Officials called off the search for the crocodile the following day because they believed it had moved on into crocodile-infested flood plains.

This is the second fatal crocodile attack in Australia in five weeks, with reports of a five-year-old boy vanishing from a rivers edge on the 8th February, in northeast Australia. Officials later confirmed this report when his remains were found in the stomach of a 4.3-metre crocodile.
