Glossary term for Accreditation

Accreditation

An accreditation is given to a company when it adheres to certain standards as imposed by an external auditing body. Accreditations are extremely important because they act as a distinguishing factor between similar companies, creating a distinction between the better companies and the not-so-good companies. In genetic testing, laboratories can be awarded the ISO 17025 if they abide by strict testing procedures as stipulated by ISO. To have ISO accreditation they must show high technical competence with all tests carried out and make sure that this high competence is consistent. For anyone wishing to carry out a DNA test, an accreditation spells out quality, and thus, the person can rest assured that their DNA test results will be reliable.
